The title, “Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis” is based on a speech by John F. Kennedy, in which he said, "The essence of ultimate decision remains impenetrable to the observer - often, indeed, to the decider himself." The mid 20th Century book is an analysis, by political scientist Graham T. Allison, who used the crisis as a case study for future studies into governmental decision-making. It became the founding study of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and in doing so revolutionized the field of international relations.

Graham T. Allison is an American political scientist distinguished for his contributions to the study and development of political decision making, especially during times of crisis. Since the 1970s, Allison has been a leading analyst of U.S. national security and defense policy, with a special interest in nuclear weapons and terrorism.
