Kennedy, in which he said, "The essence of ultimate decision remains impenetrable to the observer - often, indeed, to the decider himself." It became the founding study of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and in doing so revolutionized the field of international relations.

Since the 1970s, Allison has been a leading analyst of U.S. national security and defense policy, with a special interest in nuclear weapons and terrorism.
