MARK: red Made in Japan mark used by Noritake Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. in the early 20th Century.
ORIGIN: Of Japanese (Asian, Oriental) derivation, most Pre-WWII Noritake collectibles were designed at the Morimura Brothers Trading Company in New York City, then produced at the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. ("the Company that makes Japan's Finest China") factory in Noritake, Japan for export to Western (Occidental) markets.
CONDITION: this pepper shaker has fading and a tiny chip, yet no cracks, crazing or repairs.
COLORS: bone china white background and gold trim. The beautifully hand painted azaleas are light pink to pale fuchsia magenta. Their centers are yellow with a hint of orange and lovely white moriage - like enamel anthers. The leaves are various shades of yellow and green, including teal, accented by a touch of black.
SIZE: nearly 3” tall.
A 1924 Larkin catalog describes "Azalea" as:
"Dainty, thin, white imported China beautifully decorated with hand-painted pink and white Azaleas and green leaves. Edges richly outlined in gold. . . For afternoon tea, they are ideal. A most attractive ornament for the china-closet, sideboard, or buffet. They are wonderful values."
