This English ring is the EPITOME of elegance! The prize here is the 4.82 ct. fancy-cut natural topaz solitaire (lab-tested and guaranteed NOT a citrine)! This stone is the most luscious shade of pale honey, and is faceted to perfection! The topaz measures 12 mm in diameter and approx. 5.5 mm tall from table to culet. It is in perfect condition, without chips or scratches. The topaz is surrounded by 19 natural silver-cream pearls of approx. 2-2.5 mm each. Only one of the pearls is a 20th-century replacement; the other 18 are original to the ring!
All of the gems are collet-set in pushed-up, closed-backed mountings of 9k rose-gold (unmarked but tested). The bezel of the ring measures 3/4" in diameter. The shoulders of the ring are forked, and the shank is a simple hoop, in keeping with the style of rings of this decade. The mounting is also 9k rose-gold. (One might expect a topaz of this size and quality to be set in higher-karat gold, but it is important to remember that until after the Napoleonic Wars, gold was scarce in Great Britain.)
The rear of the bezel shows that the topaz was originally foiled and closed at the back, but around the turn of the 20th-century, a former owner decided to open the back of the stone to allow for maximum brilliance under the "new" electric light! This did not harm the stone in any way, and does not make the ring look amiss on the hand. The "window" at the back measures 3/8" long x 1/8" wide, and the rest of the mounting still retains its original foil.
This beautiful ring is currently a size 5, and appears never to have been re-sized, although the plainness of the rear of the shank would allow for conservative re-sizing by a lapidary familiar with fine antique jewelry. This ring weighs a substantial 7.2 grams, and is SO DAZZLING on the hand! It is just as wearable today as when it graced the hand of a Regency-era lady of wealth and fashion almost 200 years ago; the design is a timeless classic!
This ring represents the finest in Regency-era jewelry, and would make a wonderful and wearable addition to the finest collection of antique jewelry. It looks radiant on the hand, and the topaz has tons of fire! Do not miss this superb Georgian ring; I do not expect to find another like it!
