Dating to ca.100 AD, this fine and exceptionally large Roman intaglio is carved from deep orange-red carnelian, and depicts the standing figure of Fortuna Victrix, the Goddess of success in war!

Most Roman-era intaglios are very small in size; this large example leads me to believe that it was the focal point of an important jewel almost 2000 years ago! Measuring 1 1/3" long x just over 2/3" wide x over 6 mm thick, this Roman intaglio is one of the most resplendent of several ancient intaglios that I have owned over the years. The figure of Fortuna Victrix stands facing right, with a sword in one hand, and her wings unfurled. She is naked but for her sword and Gryphon-masked shield. At her foot is a severed head, indicating victory over the enemies of Rome.

This intaglio is carved with an eye to the smallest detail! The carnelian is completely intact, and shows the internal inclusions expected of a worked jewel of the Roman period. The impression it leaves is all the more impressive; just LOOK at this masterpiece in reverse! Intaglio were carved to show a "cameo" image when pressed into clay or sealing wax; this important example has lost none of its fine detail over the millenia!

I acquired this cameo loose, and had it mounted as a simple-yet-very substantial pendant in 14k rose-gold. This gem weighs 13.6 grams, and looks beautiful on a simple gold chain. Suitable for wear by a lady or gentleman, this fascinating Roman cameo pendant is guaranteed ancient as described, and will be sold with a COA for insurance purposes.

If you love the romance and history of Ancient Rome, or collect the best in ancient intaglios, this investment-quality jewel belongs in your collection! It woul also make the ULTIMATE gift for anyone fond of Roman jewels! or, treat yourself this year; you deserve it! This is the finest ancient jewel I have ever listed on Ruby Lane, and I have never seen another like it. Moreover, I am offering it at a price which would be well below its estimate at a high-end antique jewelry auction!
