In 1796 the "Letters of Heloise and Abelard" were published and illustrated with eight engravings by the best artists of Paris, overseen by the French engraver and illustrator J. M. Moreau the Young (1741 - 1814). "Castration of Abelard" is one the engravings that illustrates this medieval love story. The text on the page reads as follows:
