Darling small convertible shoulder bag/clutch by Morle, in genuine ostrich skin. Morle is a maker noted for its exotic-skin bags, including ostrich. This one is from the estate of Hollywood apparel designer Irene Saltern, and was from her personal wardrobe. Ms. Saltern was a film costume designer in the 40s (favorite designer of dancer Ann Miller and actress Martha Scott). Her apparel is featured in the collections of the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Los Angeles County Museum. She started designing commercial clothing in the late 40s, and was head designer for Tabak, Phil Rose, and others, including her own label. Ms. Saltern is widely credited for pioneering the separates the California sportswear industry was famous for. I have a large collection from her estate, both those of her own design and items from her personal wardrobe. All are constructed with quality, of the finest materials and workmanship. Ms. Saltern was meticulous in her selection of fabrics, matching & coordinating colors, etc., and this extended to items she chose for personal use.
This 60's bag features a lovely clasp consisting of a large milk-glass cabochon in a decorative goldtone setting. The clasp pulls down to unlatch, rather than up. Shoulder chain is a multi-link design in textured metal. It attaches on the inside of the flap so you can tuck it in and use the bag as a clutch. Candlelight-color faille lining is probably rayon. There is one small inside pocket.
Measures approx. 6" H x 9 1/2" W x 1 1/2" D. Chain is about 32" long (16" drop).
Condition: Exterior is excellent--ostrich skin is near mint, no flaws to note. Surface is clean and true white in color (lights gave it a yellow cast in photos). A bit of color wear on edges of goldtone trim on clasp. The chain's color has worn in places, but chain itself is strong without structural issues. Interior is just fair. Lining shows some soil and wear in a few places under the flap, especially where the metal chain has rubbed on it and in the fold along the top of the bag. See photos. There is what looks like a makeup stain in one corner of the bag's lining at the bottom. Probably can be cleaned professionally. These issues do not affect use or wear at all, nor will anyone else see them but you. However, I have priced this bag way, way under typical market value because of them.
