Antique Limoges Hand-painted Plate Decorated with Pansies and Thick Raised Gilt Trim. Pale lavender ruffled edges give way to raised gilt trim and raised gilt dots. Encircling the inside of the plate are delicate pansies highlighted with white enamel. Victorians loved the the sweet “face” of the pansy and the symbolism behind the name. The flower’ name was derived from the French word “pensée” or thought. Receiving a letter with a pansy tucked inside reminded the receiver that they were in the sender's thoughts. Imagine receiving a letter with a pansy instead of another email....

Beautiful for display or even better as a gift of "thought"

The plate is marked for the French company Laternier and green mark #4 1891-1914 (Gaston’s Encyclopedia of Limoges). A picture of the same mold is shown on page 234 in Gaston’s book. Though not signed; the piece is beautifully hand-painted. Measurements: 8” or 20.5cm Condition: good, minor loss of gilt work, no chips or cracks
