Delightful French treasure with a surprise inside; thimble is included! 19C. French ormolu horse drawn cart thimble holder with eglomise scene. The gilt round casket and horse are set on a marble or alabaster base. It is possible that the thimble is original to the piece, it does fit perfectly in the royal blue velvet interior. There is a mark which could be the thimble size or an identification mark; however, the thimble does test for silver content. The eglomise or reverse painted scene is of a grand chateau viewed from the gardens. I naturally think of Versailles, but it may bring to mind another French chateau for you. So much in one small package….horse, cart, eglomise top. At one time, it was a very special purchase for someone in the late 1800's as a grand reminder of their "Grand Tour".

In very good antique condition, there are only two things to note, a small piece of glass missing from the top right corner of lid (shown enlarged) and the horse and cart has a slight wiggle, but is still securely attached to the marble or alabaster base.

Measurements; 4" X 2", thimble opening just over 1/2" length 5/8"
