An Antique English Sterling Solid Silver Teapot hallmarked for 1801, made by John Fig. The circular teapot is encircled with floral decoration. It is set on four paw feet with leaf and scroll motifs. Two floral borders enhance the top of the teapot and the lid. The handle bears further floral work and ends in a leaf capped scroll. There is an engraved cartouche on each side. A flower final is the final crowning touch.

Behind this stunning teapot lies a story…..

One cartouche bears the initials J.G.S for a Mr. John Gilliam Stilwell. The other cartouche is engraved for Mr. and Mrs. Stilwell, representing the teapot as a gift for their wedding. The teapot was gifted from Lord Byron, Captain R.N. George Anson Byron was the 7th Baron Byron. In 1824 he inherited the title from a well-known family member and poet, Lord Byron. Captain Byron was an interesting and accomplished man in his own right.

He commanded the British frigate Blonde in 1824 as it carried the coffins of the deceased Hawaiian king and queen back home to Hawaii. The pair had died from a deadly form of measles while visiting England. He remained in the islands for a time and the chiefs of the island sought his advice and recommendations. He is also credited for the discovery and charting of two islands on his return trip in 1925, Malden Island and Starbuck Island. Starbuck Island had been sighted prior to that time by two American whalers that were related. Their names were Starbuck and Captain Byron named the island in their honor. He gained the rank of Admiral in 1862 and died in 1868.
