Antique paper/papier mache figural box or candy container in the shape of a horseman and his equestrian partner. The late 1800’-early 1900’s piece was acquired from an English estate in the Nottinghamshire District. The huntsman and his horse are sure to please the equestrian enthusiast. The detail and painting on this papier mache piece shows careful attention to detail. German candy containers were known for attention to details and coloring; however, the French containers were beautifully detailed also. The figural box/container’s opening is concealed by the horse’s head. This kind of opening was a common theme with German candy containers. The containers often held home made treats instead of hard candy. They were whimsical and entertaining to the eye. Please view all the pictures for the details on the pair.......from the faces of both rider and horse...to the saddle....the bridle... the buttons on his coat. Country of Origin: German or French

Material: Paper Mache/Composition

Measurements: the pair stand 7" tall and 6 3/4" from the horse's nose to the tail

Condition; very good for age and medium, the pair stands alone, there are some repairs (captured in pictures), the reins are missing, and the rider is a tad bit loose (he is attached to horse, but remains slightly loose). I slip a small folded piece of paper between the horse's head when placing on the body to be sure it stays tight. It is not necessary and most pictures are taken without it. More pictures are available.
