The Vista pattern is characterized by a border of oak leaves around a center scene of a castle, people in period clothing and a dog, all in a park-like setting. There are a variety of different castle scenes, one for each different shape.
Demitasse cup measurements: 2.25 inches tall by 2 1/8 inches in diameter. With the handle- almost 3.5 inches across. The saucer is almost 5 inches in diameter and is .75 inches deep.
This is not a new reproduction, it is not from the 1950s, it is an antique Mason's pattern that was first produced in the Victorian Era. This backmark does not have the "UNDER THE GLAZE ACID & DETERGENT PROOF" which was started to be used around the 1900's. Please note the authentic mark and the crazing.
Demitasse Cup & Saucer is in excellent shape, with no cracks or chips. There is fine crazing on both the cup & saucer. The saucer alone has a couple of rough spots on the edge; but not chipped or discolored at all. The colors are clear and bright.
The backstamp says MASON'S VISTA ENGLAND. The mark was used from 1813 onward.
I just love the history of an item and who made it for me to enjoy, all these years later. A little online history lesson:
In July 1813, Charles James Mason, the third son of Miles Mason, received a patent for his “ironstone china” at the tender age of 21! This hardened earthenware proved useful in the production of daily china, as well as industrial strength tiles used in furnaces, fireplaces, and flooring tiles. Because of its exceptional durability, ironstone became the most successful product sold by the Minerva Works factory. Soon after the creation of ironstone, the Masons’ name became popular throughout England and Europe. In 1815, Charles Mason married Sarah Spode, the granddaughter of Josiah Spode. As a result of the familial alliance, the Minerva Works acquired a second factory that was being held by the Spode family in Fenton. He continued to build up the Mason company by giving a matching service - supply of china in patterns already provided to the gentry - and by using a country-wide system of selling china by auction. Imagine that! His china can still be found being bought and sold by auction to this day! How full circle......
