The top and bottom of the stein have an orange / peach lustre finish followed by an ornate scroll ceramic design. The colors are bright and highly reflective. The stein measures 11 inches (to top of lid); 8 3/4 inches tall (top of stein - with lid up); 3 inches in diameter at top of stein and 4 1/2 inches in diameter at the base.
This stein was produced by Albert Jacob Thewalt in West Germany, post WW2, and marked with their logo of a T enclosed in a triangle that was used during that time period. The original blue label on the bottom that has the trademark of Thewalt and ORIGINAL on it is still there. The stein is in great condition with one small sliver chip. Please see all photos. This chip does not stand out and appears as a sliver of the glossy glaze that is missing. This has been reflected in the pricing.
No other cracks or dents anywhere on the stein or to the pewter lid. The ornate pewter lid has the initials-DBGM with a unusual S and the letters R M inside the openings of the S.
This colorful stein is sure to make a great addition to any collection or a perfect one to start a collection with!
Online history lesson on THEWALT steins:
"When the founder, Albert Jac.Thewalt started his own stoneware factory in 1893, he was following a long family tradition. His father and his grandfather were also potters and beer stein makers since 1781. His grandson with the same name (Albert Jac. Thewalt) manages the company to this day. Thewalt Designs.
In 1897 through 1914 Albert Thewalt employed the famous Wilhelm Kamp, who designed nearly 800 steins. These steins, which to a great extent, are still in production today, can be found in the Thewalt "Traditional Old German Steins" series. The designs on these steins are for the most part based on the paintings by the famous Tyrolese artist Franz von Defregger (1835 - 1921)."
