A great man is formed not only by the gifts of nature, but also by the sight of beautiful Art.... Count de Caylus
Did you know?
China painting is considered the most involved and difficult to master of all the brush-painted art forms, as it requires a very slow painting process of a successive thin coats of vitrified mineral paint which, when painted, has a different color than what it develops into after firing. Therefore, the artist must have great experience and understanding of the colored pigments in order to predict what the finished Art work will look like!
Each hand painted original piece offered in our collection required many hours of patient design. Successive thinly layered coats of china paint were applied between multiple kiln firings (up to 4-6 times,) to achieve the correct depths of color. The art form had to be fired at different temperatures between paint coats, which allowed the paint to be absorbed and fused into the glass over-glaze finish upon the porcelain (the paint does not remain on top of the glaze, but once fired the paint actually becomes part of the glass glaze). To complicate the china process even further, different kiln temperatures were required for different colors and for different length of times, which required great oversight, practical knowledge and technical experience by the china artist. (Tip: Don't be fooled, reproduction will lack this level of depth of artistry and color!).
In the end, at least 3-4 days of artistic labor and careful management of a gas kiln by its artist was required to create each original work of art that is currently being offered! The great French impressionist Renoir once studied china painting, as he considered it to be the most beautiful of all the brush painted art-forms due to the reflective inner highlights of the glazed finish which neither watercolors nor oils on canvas possess. But Renoir finally gave up in frustration his attempt to master china painting, due to its great difficulty and the knowledge and wide scope skills required for the mastery of painting on porcelain, which takes many years of experience and trial and error to learn and perfect this fine art!

A Note on Pricing:
I have had many people contact me through the years in reference to the market price of Limoges porcelain pieces. There are many factors that influence my decision on how to set the selling price of each item and in all honesty my decision usually favors the buyer. I mainly use on-line auctions as the marketplace to set the price of a piece instead of using the upper-end retail antique shops, auction houses, or retail gallery marketplaces. By determining on average what similar objects have sold for on-line, I can set a very fair market price for my on-line items, which in turn insures that the investment for the buyer is sound. As a rule of thumb, more common pieces are priced at a lower range and rare pieces command a higher price.
Of course, market comparison is not always an accurate way of determining the value of a piece of Limoges art porcelain. When determining the value of an item, I also take into consideration whether the piece is decorated by a French factory listed artist, amateur, unknown, or professional studio American artist. Some collectors favor French professional artist over an amateur, although some unknown artist's work is so unique and exquisite that it becomes an invaluable one-of-a kind piece to own. Not surprisingly, pieces that are signed and/or dated, by a professional or unknown artist, are usually more desirable to the collector. Hand-painted pieces are usually more collectible than a transfer or a mix of the two (mixtion) as well. The size of the piece, age, condition, and uniqueness of the white-ware mold are also important criteria for setting the value of a porcelain piece. Obviously, the beauty of the artwork itself is probably the most important pricing factor, as well as the regional or seasonal demand. I do whole-heartedly suggest that before investing heavily into any antique porcelain piece, you consult a field Price Guide. For Limoges Porcelain we suggest either the Debby DuBay's Antique Trader Limoges Price Guide, Mary Gaston's Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, or Alan Reed's Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China. With this information at hand, you can buy what you love and feel emotional secure about the investment!
If you would like to inquire about the history of a particular item in more detail, or if you are interested in negotiating a price on a certain piece, please don't hesitate to Email me! Being an avid collector myself, I am passionate about keeping as much Limoges as my cabinets, shelves, and walls can hold. It is also very gratifying for me to find & sell some of these lovely pieces to true collectors who, as I, can fully appreciate these porcelain masterpieces!
