Large Grain Painted Norwegian Tine/ Bent Wood Box, Circa 1870

Sweetpea Cottage has managed to locate a very unusual Norwegian tina, or tine, for your collection. This wonderful piece is unique because of its substantial size, but it is even more unique because of the grain-painted surface. The outside is grain painted on all surfaces except the bottom. It is chocolate brown with swirls of darker color that simulates a grain pattern. It gives the feel of walnut in design and is a terrific paint job that makes this tine stand out from all others. There is some minimal loss of the grain-painted surface as is consistent with the age of the piece. The loss of paint does not impact on the overall look of the piece. There is also some white paint that dried on the surface at one time and some places on the lid where the paint has scraped off. A small section has splintered off of the back side that is about 3/4 inches long and 1/4 inch wide, which is clearly visible in one of the photos. If you collect Norwegian or Swedish folk art, tinas, tines, or svepasks, then you do not want to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

It measures 13 inches long, 9 3/4 inches wide, and has a total height of 7 ½ inches. The height of the box portion alone is 6 1/8 inches. The inside is unpainted pine and there are no signs of insect holes visible anywhere. The box is laced together with two tongues that are double laced using traditional birch root. The top is keyed so that it will only fit on one way. As is typical of all early tines, with time the bottom has shrunk away from the sides a bit so that it is no longer a tight fit. The only metal on the piece is the iron handle that is crimp tacked on the inside and two early crimped nails that have been used to attach the side stiles. The base is attached with carved wooden pegs and there is a very thin coat of bitterweet color painted on the bottom.

We have been collecting and dealing with old Scandinavian boxes for years, but have never encountered a box such as this. It is truly unique and impressive in its quality.
