Large Grain Painted Norwegian Tine/ Bent Wood Box, Circa 1870
It measures 13 inches long, 9 3/4 inches wide, and has a total height of 7 ½ inches. The height of the box portion alone is 6 1/8 inches. The inside is unpainted pine and there are no signs of insect holes visible anywhere. The box is laced together with two tongues that are double laced using traditional birch root. The top is keyed so that it will only fit on one way. As is typical of all early tines, with time the bottom has shrunk away from the sides a bit so that it is no longer a tight fit. The only metal on the piece is the iron handle that is crimp tacked on the inside and two early crimped nails that have been used to attach the side stiles. The base is attached with carved wooden pegs and there is a very thin coat of bitterweet color painted on the bottom.
We have been collecting and dealing with old Scandinavian boxes for years, but have never encountered a box such as this. It is truly unique and impressive in its quality.
