About Us
My name is Judy Perilstein , and I have a passion for old buttons! Their interesting diversity of style and material from the purely plain and functional to the beautiful objets d'art is a fascinating glimpse back into social eras and fashion history. And my interest is all due to a
stroke of luck......
Years ago I had the great good fortune of purchasing a lonely old box at a local garage sale because I noticed that it contained some sheets of cardboard with buttons attached. I remember paying a total of five dollars for this. When I got home, I discovered that it contained an extensive collection of old buttons, lovingly categorized and displayed artistically on the sheets. There were Victorian black glass, ornate metals, mother of pearl, celluloid, any many, many others. Before this lucky purchase I had just a passing interest in buttons, but as I closely looked at these beautiful objects, I became more and more intrigued. I wanted to learn more and actually do more with them. Jewelry was calling!
Buttons are not the easiest medium to work with, but with a lot of experimentation and determination, I came up with styles that are uniquely my own , and they are featured here at Round Two. The name comes from the fact that buttons are mostly round and designing them into jewelry gives them a second chance to enhance!
Over the years I have been blessed to live in Lancaster County Pa, an area rich in history and antique markets, where I can search for and find great buttons. A found button jar , all spilled out for treasure, is a joyful experience!
I have been selling the jewelry now for about five years, after some years of creating pieces for friends and family as gifts. With their loving persuasion, I started selling at craft fairs, antique markets, and by commission. I have been accepted into a prestigious show each December put on by the Manheim Historical Society called the Manheim Folk Art Show. There are only twelve artisans in the show and I am the only jewelry maker . I also have a stand at an antique market in Adamstown Pa called Shupps Grove in the warmer months of the year, and here I get to sell and satisfy my ongoing button quest! And Lancaster has wonderful First Friday Art events. I will be participating in the new Lancaster Art Market
at Lancaster Square each month starting May 4th 2012.
Because of their interesting nature, I love to explain the types of buttons used in each piece. And,
except for the drilling of center holes in some Mother of Pearl buttons for design purposes, none of the shanks of other material buttons, such as glass or metals, have been removed. There are
zillions of sweet old Mother of Pearl buttons that have been saved in button jars and boxes, but not so many of the glass and metals, etc. In keeping the shanks intact, the buttons remain whole as the tiny treasures they were created to be, and a few MOP's had to be sacrificed for the good cause! My goal and wish is for my customers to ENJOY wearing a piece of jewelry with historical value along with an appreciation into the elegance and whimsy of our past through the world of BUTTONS!
E-mail me with thoughts, ideas, suggestions, your own wishes, and I would be most happy to hear from you!
The Button Lady, Judy
