About UsI grew up in a farmhouse that was originally built in the late 1700's. During this time I developed a strong appreciation for antiques and history. My personal favorite is the Victorian period. Sometimes I even wonder what my life would have been like had I been born in that time instead of the present.
For as long as I can remember, I have always had an interest in self employment. It seems like I was constantly doing something to earn some extra income. Crafts have also been a part of my life from childhood to the present. As a teen I started competing in local fairs, and this continued into my early twenties. During this time I accumulated numerous ribbons, rosettes, and several trophies. At times I would combine the two interests and sell items I had made.
I first tried my hand at eBay in the fall of 1999. I started off by selling some items I already had but no longer wanted. After seeing how much potential there was for an income on eBay, I started looking for something I could deal in that was small, easy to ship and profitable. Soon I was selling vintage jewelry. I enjoyed working with something with some history to it as well repairing the pieces.
As more people began to sell on eBay, I found it increasingly difficult to make money on the vintage jewelry. I decided to try something new and sold off all my vintage jewelry, including a large stash of rhinestones used for repairs. I started buying gemstone beads wholesale and selling them on eBay. For a couple of years I had good sales and was making a profit to supplement my income. Then the competition increased and I was not able to make a profit anymore due to all the cheap imports.
I have tried a variety of things to earn an income with my interests and skills. Notably are handmade jewelry and handmade beads. I still enjoy these things but don't spend much time on them anymore.
I just couldn't stay away from the vintage jewelry. This time I tried co-op style indoor flea markets and antique shops. I have tried several locations. My favorite was the Sturbridge Antiques Co-op. Over time I realized that I liked shopping in such places but that I personally preferred selling online. That became even more evident in the winter when the roads were bad.
In a search for information on the internet I discovered Ruby Lane, a site that offers high quality handmade goods and antiques. This site is such a good fit for what I wanted to do that I just had to give it a try. So, starting in the fall of 2009, I was back on the internet market.
I am updating this page in November of 2012. At this time, Ruby Lane has become my main venue for selling vintage costume jewelry. To keep inventory fresh, I will occasionally auction off some items on eBay. I have also been known to send bulk lots to a local auction in Spencer. However, if you are interested in my very best jewelry, you will want to keep an eye on my shop on Ruby Lane.
