About My ShopMy shop offers antiques and vintage purses ranging from the mid 19th century to the late 20th century. THe shop offers purses primarily from the 1950's and 1960's that are beaded (mostly from France), embroidered, made of lucite, have bakelite accents and, of course, made from fabric, leather and suede. Many of these purses are perfect to wear as evening bags, while others are funky and mod and are just fun to wear. Designers from the period such as Josef, Rosenfeld and Meyers are especially featured. I also offer many Judith Leiber handbags, as well as purses from lesser known designers who influenced her such as Martin Van Schaak.
My shop also offers vintage costume jewelry from the 20th century. Designers, such as Pauline Rader, Henkel and Grosse and Nettie Rosenstein are offered in my shop, among others. I tend to be attracted to lesser known designers of purses and jewelry who influenced the more well known designers. I have recently added objects d'art from the Victorian era, Art Deco period and the Eames era. I specialize in Victorian glass, mainly Wavecrest and plastics (celluloid, lucite, and bakelite) from the 20th century.
The only prerequisite that I have when acquiring "treasures" is that everything I buy, whether for my personal collection or my shop has to something that I love and would gladly use. Sometimes it's hard to give them up!
About Me and My Shop's Name
I have collected antiques for many years. After retiring from teaching special education in NYC, I decided to expand my hobby to selling some of these beautiful and wonderful items. I have sold in antique malls, antique shops and antique shows.
A word about my strange business name. For some reason I called my dogs "goomises" as in poochiegoomis. This became Mr. Goomis and Ms. Goomis. Hence, my official business name M/M Goomis Antiques. What can I say, just as I love my antiques, I also love my dogs!
