Louis Wine Ltd, Toronto based specialists in Antique Silver, Antique Jewellery and Decorative Arts, is a fourth generation family business. Until opening in Canada in 1982, the firm was based in Ireland. The Wine family’s roots in Ireland go back to 1879 when Solomon Wine, the present owner’s great-great grand-father, immigrated from Russian held Lithuania. Louis Wine (1865-1946) founded the Company in 1880. Louis Wine began selling to collectors in Dublin from a shop in historic Wellington Quay. Later in 1908, he took over an existing location in Dublin’s fashionable Grafton Street and renamed it Louis Wine Ltd. To the firm, came the worlds leading silver collectors seeking advice and additions to their collections. The firm became a legend in Ireland on Grafton Street until 1981, when the growing international nature of the business, led us to relocate to Toronto. The gallery is now located in Toronto’s prestigious Yorkville.
The international thrust and outlook was first put into practice by Louis Wine’s son, Harry, (1892-1969). Under him, the firm’s renown extended overseas, when during the 1950’s some of its finest stock was regularly exhibited by invitation in New York, Wilmington Delaware and elsewhere in the U.S.A.
Clients included William Randolph Hearst, Their Highnesses The late Prince Ranier and The late Princess Grace of Monaco, the Getty and DuPont families, Heads of State, Prime Ministers as well as many museums and foreign governments.
Today, we continue our emphasis throughout North America. We have exhibited at shows in New York, Chicago, Washington, Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas and Palm Beach.
Our Toronto gallery, at 150 Cumberland Street (Yorkville), has constantly on display a full range of fine period silver, old Sheffield and plated metal wares, Antique jewellery and Decorative Arts from the 18th century to the early 20th century.
