Lady with Red Hair Oil on Board Vintage Painting - Listed Artist Carolus Verhaeren

Lady with Red Hair Oil on Board Vintage Painting by Listed Artist Carolus Verhaeren. Circa 1940/50s. This lovely work of art was painted by early California painter, Carolus Verhaeren, and measures 16" wide x 19.5" high with frame. The painting view is 11" wide x 14.5" high. It was painted with an oil medium on masonite board and is in good condition. There is minor paint loss/wear but the shades of red and green are simply wonderful. It has its original wood frame which shows old water damage along the lower edge of the back. The painting does not appear to have been affected and there is no sign of damage other than minor paint loss/wear from age. It is signed "C. Verhaeren" in the lower left corner.

Carolus Verhaeren was a distinguished, life-long artist committed to his bold use of color and also well-known for his use of the palette knife. He met a tragic end when he took his own life at age 48, after a misguided love affair with his mistress. I've always personally wondered (but am uncertain) if his love affair was with the "Lady with Red Hair."

I encourage you to read more about Carolus Verhaeren and his work. I obtained the following information from the San Diego Historical Society website:

Verhaeren, Carolus Constantinius (1908-1956) - Painter

"Born in Antwerp, Belgium on June 18, 1908. Verhaeren was from a distinguished family of Flemish artists. With his family, he fled to London, England during World War I. There he first learned to paint from the many "sidewalk artists" before moving to Canada where he studied with George DeVore for five years. For ten years he maintained a studio in Detroit, Michigan. Having made trips to California in the 1930s, in 1946 he settled in La Jolla where he established a studio-gallery and taught art. During the 1950s he often painted with Alfred Mitchell in the San Diego back country. An Impressionist, he used a palette knife to create coastals, landscapes, and portraits. An aborted love affair led to his suicide on September 14, 1956. Exhibited: La Jolla AA, 1946-1956; Independent Artists (Phoenix), 1948 (award); Brussels, 1948; Wales Galleries (Tucson), 1950 (solo); Carlsbad-Oceanside Show, 1950 (award); De Young Museum, 1952; SWA, 1952-55; Laguna Beach AA, 1955; Palm Desert Art Gallery, 1956 (solo); San Diego County Fairs (awards). Works held: La Jolla Historical Society, La Valencia Hotel, Casa de Maņana, Scripps Hospital, all in La Jolla. Source: WWAA 1956-62."
