About Us
EzCrane Designs

Two keys to my designs are experimentation and improvisation. Each piece comes together like a sculpture or a painting. Since I was a dancer, both choreographer and performer, improvisation has been a natural part of my design process. This is the way I used to choreograph. I never counted or named the steps. My jewelry design is similarly intuitive. When it comes naturally, you can see it in the work - it breathes and has life.

My entire professional life has centered on intense studies in the visual and performing arts. My core strength in both areas is improvisation.

I attended UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley, where I majored in art and dance. I subsequently studied with two masters of jazz tap, Eddie Brown and Charles "Honi" Coles who gave me the inspiration to embark on a professional career in tap.

I met Gregory Hines when I took his master class in jazz tap at the Blue Note Club in New York City. Later he asked me to improvise with him for a master class he was giving on improvisation. We ï¾"traded foursï¾" - this is a traditional form of improvisation in jazz tap.

The next day I flew home to my Oakland studio. That night, I got a call from Gregory. All he said was "Ez, I need ya!" The next day I flew back to New York. I spent the next year working as Gregory's assistant choreographer on Francis Ford Coppola's film ï¾"The Cotton Club.ï¾"

Throughout these years, I had been part of a group called the Jazz Tap Ensemble, made up of three jazz tap dancers and three jazz musicians. I continued to perform with this group, completing three long European tours. While on tour, I became captivated by the amazing jewelry in the Milan and Paris fashion shows. A few years later, I had a serious accident that ended my dancing career, and I began to focus solely on jewelry and design.

During my painting days at UC Berkeley, light, form, and color had been my main focus. Today, the gems in my jewelry designs parallel the colors of my painterï¾'s palette. These colors spark my imagination through every piece.
