About Us

Design References is a life-long pursuit established by a former art museum curator who can call upon half a century of searching, collecting, and researching the aggressive, progressive, regressive, and retrogressive ideals of modern design rooted in the nineteenth century, culminating in the twentieth century, and then metastasizing in the twenty first century. Areas of very humble expertise include all of the traditional decorative arts, architecture, industrial and studio arts, with a particular emphasis on the handmade object.

The inventory at Design References includes all media, both two and three dimensional. This includes but is not limited to art glass, ceramics and studio pottery, metalwork of all types, textiles and fiber art, leather and wood art, plastics of all genre, silver and gold, stone art, sculpture, bronze, the painted surface including oils and acrylics and watercolor -- among others, the printed surface including serigraph and mezzotint and etching -- among others, as well as paper-related art and design forms. In addition, the inventory at Design References can boast over ten thousand examples of enamel art, otherwise known as glass on metal, which includes copper, steel, aluminum, iron, and bronze.
