Some of the most fabulous jewels of the past, despite their often magnificent elegance, were designed with tongue in cheek and a childlike fascination with trickery and sleight-of-hand by some of the most brilliant artists of their time. The great Marcel Boucher, for example, was a consummate comedian. He abandoned a promising but dull career as a fine jeweler with Cartier for the pleasure of creating ingenious fakes, playful puns, and surrealist figurals. As head designer of Coro, Gene Verrecchio grew a lush Garden of Eden of startlingly realistic flora and then created a menagerie of fanciful critters of every species to inhabit it.It seems the costume jewelry world has always been about fun...fun things...cute things..let the imagination run wild.
