A wonderful item from the late 1700s to earliest 1800s, and directly here out of France, a splendid old Chatelaine complete with the belt hook and the 'necessaire' or etui that holds a charming array of early traveler's items. A purse of sorts, these hung from the belt and carried the essentials we now would relegate to a purse. I would have said it's English but there are no hallmarks, or at least none that are easily visible. I've gone nearly blind trying to find them, and of course we know the French marks would be on the inner lip of the etui, or necessaire as well as on the chatelaine, itself. There may well be tiny dutch marks, but they're often so dificult to find. Typical European 19th century chatelaine, though, and does test .925 purity silver, which is sterling.
