Georgian Quillwork Music Box Antique Quilling Portrait Painting
18th C. quilling, quillwork, paper filigree, is a rare folk art form dating back to the 17th century. It is thin strips of paper, that is rolled and scrolled, making elaborated patterns and design. The paper on this MUSIC box had GOLD gilding along the edges. The box is made with a light soft wood, with inlaid dark and light border. It has a central hand painted portrait of a young girl, with her arm over her head, and a garland of roses. The lid opens to show a mechanical wind music cylinder with all tines intact. It has a KEY, also a pin that sticks out the side to stop and start the sounds. When I was taking the pictures it started playing, it was wonderful.
In good condition, circa 1780 – 1840, made in England, it measures 5 x 3 ½ x 2 ½ inches tall.
