Vintage French Boulangerie Basket

Vintage boulangerie bread basket from France. It is made of willow, lined in linen (the fabric is sewn in) and dates to the 1920s. The blue stripe is still visible in some places in the linen!

Of course, it has seen lots of use. These traditional baskets also known as bannetons (dough baskets) were used for the proofing (or rising) of bread dough. They would be dusted with flour before the dough was added. Such a common sight in French bakeries.

This one with the raised center is used for making couronne bread---a crusty bread with a hole in the middle. Couronne literally means "crown" in English.

Good vintage condition with darkening of the linen liner from years of use. The willow is free of any breaks.

It measures 12" D X 8" W X 4" H.

Definitely a French Country kitchen essential.
