Wonderful early 20th century heavy cast iron fireback from France depicting a Breton girl with lovely scrolling around the edges. In wonderful condition its dimensions are 19 1/2"H X 16"W.
Firebacks were historically used to keep burning embers from cracking and popping into the room and it also absorbed the heat from the fire and radiated it back into the room. Originally a luxury item for royalty and aristocracy they later became more popular and widespread.
In addition for use in a fireplace, they make wonderful decorative statements used as a backsplash for stoves or water fountains.
