French Carriage Clock

French carriage clock, 100% original and completely restored. Circa 1890 - 1900, retailed by Smith Patterson, Boston. Over 70 restored antique clocks to choose from. Made by Armand Couaillet Saint-Nicholas-d'Aliermont, France. Clock is 4 1/4" tall, with the handle extended upright 5 3/4" tall, 3 1/8" wide by 2 1/2" deep. The brass case was completely disassembled, cleaned, polished to a mirror finish, then lacquered, just like it was originally. The movement was rebuilt including the original 11 jewel compensating balance platform escapement. The back plate of the movement has the correct Couaillet Family Arrow trademark. Reference Book: Carriage Clocks by Charles Allix, page 435. This clock is a strong running week duration timepiece. The French "Z'ero bis" case has the low serial #118. All five pieces of the beveled glass are original, one side piece has a chip. The rear access door is made of two pieces brass frame that screw together to hold the beveled glass. This is a bit unusual. The case retains the brass under plate, this is usually missing for those that had one. The porcelain dial is MINT, no cracks, no chips. This clock looks and runs like the day it was made over 100 years ago. The clock comes with a carriage clock key and a specific set of instructions. See last photo for 2 other examples to choose from. See all the photos.

A SIDE NOTE: To assist you in purchasing a good Antique Clock. The value of a Antique Clock is directly attributed to RESTORED CONDITION & ORIGINALITY Saying the restoration work was performed and actually performing the restoration work by a knowledgeable clockmaker are two different issues. The vast percentage of old clocks have a great deal of wear and should be completely disassembled for cleaning. This is the only way one can inspect for wear and then eliminate all the friction created by the wear. The latest is the clock was "Professionally Cleaned", this means absolutely nothing. Simply dumping the clock movement into a can of Carburetor cleaner to wash off the dirt will not eliminate years of wear. Yes the clock may run for a few months with a healthy dose of WD-40. This is not proper clock servicing. Questions you need to ask these on-line Bodgers, whether it is on Flea-b-a-y or even here on RL, is the clock or watch movement original to the case, what has been replaced and has the clock movement been properly restored and get this information in writing. When the terms such as "Good Running Order", "Running", "Runs Great" generally means the clock is not keeping time and probably will not, this also means it has not been properly restored. Therefore you will need to spend several hundred dollars to have the clock put right. These few tips will save you some serious problems and money.
