Spectacular 3 volume set of Leather Bound Books. The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillana, rendered into English by Henri Van Laun with an Introductory notice Life of Lesage and Notes.Edinburgh:William Patterson MDCCCLXXXVI. The impression of this Edition in three volumes Imperial 8 vol. is limited to 125 copies of which this is No 33. On India Pages. The volumes are quite the masterpiece. The bindings are Moroccan three Quarter Leather & marbleized boards. The spine has five raised bands with gold title stamping with elaborate scroll & flower decoration, along with the date of 1886. The condition is very good. The bindings are especially attractive & fine. The pages are very good with only the usual minor brown spots here & there. The volumes have many engravings with tissue guard & top edge is gold gilt.

Lesage’s Masterpiece, Gil Blas of Santillana, is the most widely known off all European works of fiction with the exception of Don Quixote. It is a book to be studied as well as enjoyed. Though the world through which we follow Gil Blas may often remind us of intrigue & moral topsy-turviness-the world of flippant Valets & roguish ladies maids, of pliant duennas & arch lovers- none can read the story without finding in it one of the deepest criticisms of life ever penned.
