3 Volumes Maine A History Book
Three volumes of Maine - A History – Resources, Attractions and its People. Edited by Harrie B. Cob. Published by the Lewis Historical Publishing Company, Inc. New York 1928. This set contains Volume I, II and IV. The wealth of information in these three volumes is breathtaking! The table of contents is listed in Volume I which extends and ends in volume II. There are fourteen chapters covering everything from - What is Maine and the Separation from Massachusetts to Agriculture and Religious Progress – basically everything. In the back of volume II there is an appendix and a user friendly index. I have no idea what chapter III of this set covers but volume IV is very interesting. It is a biographical listing for the great natives of Maine. It is quite interesting! It also contains a user friendly index of names in the back. Here is just a few (and I mean a very few) of the people mentioned – Adair, Adams, Barnes, Bishop, Brewer, Churchill, Cumming, Larrabee, Hoyt, McLaughlin, Putnam, Rackliff, Ross, Smith, Ward and Winslow. All three volumes have fabulous crisp photographs taking you back to the early days of Maine and there are numerous portraits accompanying the biographies in volume IV. The three volumes are all in very good condition. They have green and black cloth over boards for the covers with gold embossing on the spine. Volume I and II are quite larger in size compared to volume IV. They all measure 10 ¾”h x 8”w but Volumes I and II are 2 ¼” thick while volume IV is 1 ½” thick. There is the expected rubbing/edgeware to the edges of the covers. They all have blue speckled end papers. The pages are all in very good condition with some browning to the outer edges. The bindings are tight and clean. Fabulous collection not only for the Maine native or history buff but for someone who’s family genealogy goes back to Maine.
