2 Volumes History of England by Guizot Books

Volume III and IV History of England by Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot, LL.D. The author was a member of the French Academy, The Royal Society (London), The Society of Antiquaries (London); Ambassador at the Court of St. James; Prime Minister of France under Louis Philippe, etc. These books were translated by M.M. Ripley. They are fully illustrated with wood and steel plates from drawings by the most celebrated artists, among whom are A. De Neuville, Sir John Gilbert, P. Leyendecker, G. Staal, Emile Bayard, and T. Weber. Published by Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat 301 Washington St Boston. Copyright 1876. These two fabulous volumes have a bright vivid red cloth over board cover on all for corners and along the spine. The front and back cover have a red and butterscotch colored marbleizing on them which is also on the end pages. The spine is gold embossed with the title, author and volume along with ornate decorative designs separating each. As would be expected the books are quite worn. Each of the volumes contains a label on the inside which reads Colby College Library 9which is located in Waterville, Maine). With that in mind it is no wonder that these books are worn on all edges of the spine and cover. It appears that the inside front page of each volume was repaired using some sort of tape in order to hold it in place. It is apparent that these two volumes were well used and being that quite a few famous and influential politicians attended Colby College it leaves you to wonder just who may have used them. I found these books exciting because of there grand ambience not to mention the story told within their pages – quite an addition to anyone’s library! They measure a grand 9 ¾” x 7 ¼” x 2 ¼”.
