Antique Engraving Biblical Gold Frame Large

This is something very exciting – a rare find indeed. Circa 1830 engraving entitled - The Opening of the Sixth Seal. London published January 1830 by M. Colnaghi 23 Cockspur St. This fabulous engraving is housed in its original lemon gold frame. There is a passage on the bottom starting on left from Revelations 6:12-17 and it reads – “And I beheld when he open the sixth seal, and lo there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the moon became as blood; and the stars of heaven fell into the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of earth and the great men and the rich men and the chief captains and the mighty men and every bond man and every free man hide themselves in their dens and in the rocks of the mountains. And said to the mountains and rocks fall upon us and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne and from the wrath of the lamb for the great day of his wrath has come and who should be able to stand.” In the center in very fine engraved script it reads Engraved by CH Phillips from the original picture by F Danby ARA. In the collection of William Bedford Esq. Overall the engraving has quite a bit of acid burning mainly on the edges and the bottom – actually this could probably be restored fairly well and it is well worth doing. The glass in the frame is the original glass with the bubbles and waves. The picture so far has not been taking out of the frame and I can see that it has been patted with a great amount of newspaper in the back. The frame of course as I said is all the original lemon gold - it does have a little bit of flaking and a little bit of wear but overall I would say fairly good for a piece dating form 1830’s. Overall it measures 36 ½” x 29 3/8” with a sight size of 30 Ό” x 23 Ό”. The frame is 3 ½” wide and 2 3/8” deep.
