Tigers Ink Drawing 1887 Evert Van Muyden

This is so exciting to me! A glorious pen & ink drawing by the world famous Evert Van Muyden:A short Bio to follow. Two Tigers by a stream as the one tiger takes a drink the other stands guard. This drawing as you can see has incredible detail .Signed on the lower left with “Evert Van Muyden & a Tiger Head & 87” & also on lower right under drawing. This is a large picture & is housed in the original light brown color mahogany frame with a very rich patina. The top left corner of the frame has a tiny bit of stress & the matt has some damp stains , but these are on the mat only ,not the picture. On the back of the frame written in pencil states that this picture had some old glue & black paper removed from the back in 1983. This artist is quite famous as an illustrator as well as having a serious passion for Tigers. This pictures measures overall in the frame 28 ½” x 24” .The sight size is 18 ½” x 14 ½”. (b Albano, Laziale, nr Rome, 18 July 1853; d Orsay, nr Paris, 27 Feb 1922). Swiss engraver, illustrator and painter. He began his studies with his father, the painter Alfred van Muyden (1818-98), and then studied in Geneva, Berlin and Paris. From 1879 to 1884 he worked in Rome, where he painted mainly landscapes, typical of which is View of the Piazza del Olmo at Tivoli (c. 1880; Basle, Kstmus.), which shows the influence of Corot. From 1885 he lived in Paris and painted animals in the manner of Antoine-Louis Barye. He made hundreds of drawings and engravings of plants and animals from the Mus?um National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Zoologischer Garten in Basle. The double portrait of his dog Sultan (1889; Basle, Kstmus.) demonstrates his fluid style rooted in naturalism based on direct observation. He illustrated many books, including Champfleury's Contes choisis (Paris, 1899) and Emil Frey's Die Kriegstaten der Schweiz (Neuch?tel, 1905). Although he produced isolated portraits and various sculptures, only his engravings and book illustrations are well known.
