Antique Wooden Pope Joan Game Board, Card Game
This is a wooden Pope Joan game board that dates to around 1800. It measures 12" diameter and swivels on its base like a lazy susan. It has eight compartments named respectively Pope-Joan, Matrimony, Intrigue, Ace, King, Queen, Knave and Game. The red and green details are painted directly on the board, and the small cards are glued on and covered with varnish. The board shows overall wear and has a chip on one side. The center compartment has a removable lid. Pope Joan, a round game of cards, was named after a legendary female Pope of the 9th century. An ordinary pack of cards was used in play, from which the eight of diamonds was removed, and game counters were used.
