A.V. Gregory "The Ship Kennedy" Mixed Media on Board

Arthur V. Gregory (1867-1957) was a marine painter from South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The son of the noted artist George Frederick Gregory, Arthur took over his father's Gregory Studios in South Melbourne and specialized in ship portraits.

Few vessels have had as varied a history as the G.D. Kennedy. Built in 1888 in England as the Dunboyne, the vessel was later, by 1900, rechristened the G.D. Kennedy. It would be sold in 1909 and again in 1924, and at the latter time was renamed AF Chapman. The iron - hulled, three - masted vessel was used from that time until 1947 by the Swedish Navy as a sail training ship before being reconstituted as a floating youth hostel moored in Stockholm. The vessel had been photographed ca.1900 while visiting Port Adelaide not far from Gregory's home in South Melbourne. The painting, dated 1944, may have been based on that image.
