Edna Lawrence, (1898-1987) Watercolor

Edna Lawrence, a native of New York, studied at the Rhode Island School of Design under Aldro Hibbard and Eliza Gardiner. Lawrence then taught at RISD for an amazing 52 years (1922-1974). A lover and painter of nature, Lawrence is best known for amassing and cataloging most of the school's extraordinary collection of more than 25,000 insects, plants and minerals.

During her long career in the arts, Lawrence traveled extensively and exhibited her work at many important American shows. She was a member of numerous art organizations, including the Providence Water Color Club and the Society of Independent Artists in New York. Her work is included in the collections of RISD, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and other institutions.

This charming, unframed watercolor was probably painted on a trip to France. It measures 11 5/8" x 14 15/16" and is signed "E.W. Lawrence" bottom left.
