FINE FRENCH BRONZE SCULPTURE OF LIONESS With foundry stamp of "Mottheau, Paris" and seal of "Syndicat Fabriq de Bronzes 1818 Unis" Signed "G. Poitvin" and impressed 1910, 22 and 10 Item # 1406OVR10P
A positively stunning work in bronze for the commercial market by Mottheau, presumably sculpted by an employed artist "G. Poitvin", this is a vivid and rather exceptional example for the firm. The raw power and tension of the beast is captured with great emotion, the form loosely impressionistic in taste while anatomically remaining perfectly technical in proportions and muscular representation. The lion rests over a naturalistic base. For serious collectors of animalier sculptures, this is a positively exceptional acquisition.
Measurements: 10 1/4" high x 7" deep (base) x 21 1/2" long (approximately)
Condition Report: Exceptional overall condition. Light patina wear along typical places of handling: base of tail, edges of naturalistic base, ear tips, etc. Very faint blue pigment under wax beside paw and on base, as well as very light specks of blue - not detracting visually, but this could be removed without any impact to patina.
