FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE ANTIQUE JEWEL CASKET, Late 19th Century, monogrammed "JHG 1889" on inside of lid
Item # 1406CYP23P
This is a beautiful antique jewel casket from the last quarter of the 19th Century. Unmarked, the quality of the castings throughout is rather fine for the period - typically these boxes were cast with a white metal for the panels, which on preliminary examination appears to be the case with this casket as well. The gilded surfaces are probably brass, burnished into a bright golden tone. The panels have varied classical scenes depicting puttos flanking a victorious maiden, the side panels featuring musical instruments with a diverse display of foliage and floral arrangements. Each corner is embellished with a bold ram's head capital over a scrolled column terminating in a robust patinated acanthus leaf.
It is a gorgeous little box of simply wonderful quality throughout.
Measurements: 10" wide x 6" deep x 7" high
Condition Report: No key, the top designed to "pop" when unlocked, resulting in a 1/4" angle - to be properly displayed with lid closed, a key should be made or found for it. Patina wear to castings throughout, the gilt tarnished. The panels are probably cast spelter or some other white metal, the gilded areas either brass or bronze. Two dents to top, not notable except on closer examination.
