NICHOLAS P. BRIGANTI (AMERICAN, 1895-1989) "VIEW OF VENICE", Signed lower right "N. Briganti"
Item # 1405YLP18P
This absolutely gorgeous work captures the shimmering waters of the Venice Lagoon from the perspective of local fishermen along the shores of the marsh, the city rising in the distance with it's spires and domes piercing the horizon of a late morning sky. The style and subject are quite typical of Briganti, a very well listed artist who specialized in landscapes of Venice throughout the 20th Century. His works have been offered extensively at auction, much of his work achieving the mid-to-high four-figures. The present example is a very fine representation of his skill, a highly diverse impressionistic work full of life and color. For anyone passionate about Venetian scenes, this is a fine investment grade work of outstanding size and condition.
Marks: Stretcher inscribed on upper left "# 8064 Venice" w/ old gallery label from Loeser's of Brooklyn. Stretcher bar retains ink stamp of "Fredrix of New York" on side.
Notes: E. Benezit, "Dictionary of Artists, vol. II", Gründ, p. 1248 - brief notes on Briganti as well as extensive notes on auction results through 2004.
Measurements: [framed] 44 3/8" wide x 34 3/8" high; [canvas] 38 1/16" wide x 28" high
Condition Report: Under UV the painting appears to be untouched and in fully original condition. Original lining and stretcher, the frame almost certainly original to the painting. Two surface scratches in upper-mid quadrant (in sky); light and consistent craquelure throughout surface; varnish yellowing - the painting would be much more vibrant if cleaned, and we can arrange to have this completed by our conservationist upon request (note it can take several months, but the result is always outstanding); frame with large gesso loss in upper right corner and much crackling, all corners with minor losses. Some separation between interior and exterior frame (not particularly visible, but worth noting). A very attractive work in well preserved condition.
