BRITISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) OIL ON PANEL OF STEAMBOAT AND SHIPS AT SEA, Signed "H. Bond" in lower left corner
Item # 1401DKE20PP
A finely detailed and executed rendering in oil on panel of the twin masted steamboat "Eros" sailing into the rolling green waters of a harbor, two smaller vessels visible in the background. A seagull flies above a wooden barrel buoy, a warning of the land just faintly visible in the leftmost edge of the scene. The ship is of exquisite precision, each brush stroke minuscule and exacting, capturing with a delicate hand the subtle curve and swell of the ship's hull - black smoke billows from the stack at the center of the vessel, a handful of onlookers watching the impending shore.
For anyone passionate about fine nautical scenes, this is an exceptional find.
Measurements: [frame] 29" x 20 7/8"; [panel] 23 7/8" x 15 1/2"
Condition Report: Frame not original; frame cracked along right hand edge - we can glue this upon request, but the seam and weakness will remain. Dimples along edges from nail beneath the surface; very light surface grime and very light surface craquelure. Panel is backed by a later panel, the panel almost certainly trimmed (hence the absence of a full signature). [UNDER UV] scattered touch ups in sky; ships and water are untouched. Overall exceptional well preserved condition.
