Set of Ten English Hepplewhite Style Carved Mahogany Dining Chairs with carved Rams Head & Inlaid Splats, Retailed and labeled by B. Altman & Co, New York
Item # 130301RYT27
This is a very fine set of Ten English Hepplewhite Style Dining Chairs originally retailed by the B. Altman & Co stores in New York City during the first quarter of the 20th Century. B. Altman & Co., a high-end department store known for their remarkably high quality tailored clothing and fine selections of furniture, was founded in 1865 - their flagship location in Manhattan opened in 1906 and operated in the City until 1989. This set bears a single label on the underside of one chair, noting that as it's original place of retail sale.
The set comprises of two arm chairs and eight side chairs, two of these side chairs of just slightly varied design - it is quite likely the original owner purchased two arm chairs and six side chairs, later realizing they needed two more to complete the dining room properly and purchased two more of a slightly later production. We have a large slideshow of additional images available upon contact that will allow you to see the side-by-side shots we take of the chairs, comparing the slight variations in the bellflower, rams head and inlaid plaque execution.
Exquisitely crafted of solid mahogany, the medallion-backs carefully molded with bellflower carvings of the solid draping from the crest into the stiles, flanking a pierced splat crested by two opposing ram-heads over an inlaid plaque at the center of the splat. The seats are covered in a fine faux-leather teal green upholstery nailed along the bottom edges with brass tacks. Resting over straight-molded legs and stretched with a box-form stretcher of double-dowel construction, the overall lines of the chair are quite pleasing visually. Note, the stretchers have light separations throughout that can quickly be repaired with some glue and clamps, resulting in some looseness in the joints throughout.
A very fine set that remains in quite simply gorgeous condition, well preserved in color and form, a nice patina slowly forming in the deep mahogany finish, this is a very striking antique dining chair set for any classical dining room. Above reproach in every way, this is an outstanding antique set of dining chairs for any serious interior designer or decorator requiring utmost quality.
Arm Chairs: 24" wide x 21-22" deep x 38 3/8" high; 19" high to the seat; Six of the side chairs: 20 1/4" wide x 21" deep x 37 3/4" high; 18 3/4" high to the seat; Two slightly variated side chairs: 19 1/2" wide x 19 3/4" deep x 37" high; 18 1/4" high to the seat
Condition Report: Gorgeous glowing finish. Leather throughout in overall excellent condition with just minor little spots and discoloration. Several chair joints are loose due to the glue loosening in the stretchers resulting in some wiggle in several chairs - these could be easily repaired with some clamps and glue. One side chair has a light separation where the crest rail dowels into the stiles, likewise a relatively simple repair with some clamps and glue. Minor dings and chips, more dings on the back of the legs, though overall condition is quite outstanding. No repairs or restorations. Two chairs are probably a slightly later purchase from Altman, having minor variations from the other eight chairs in the carvings and dimensions.
