British School Antique Landscape Painting, Cows at Pasture before Hills and Village, Oil on Canvas, Late 18th - Early 19th Century

This is an absolutely gorgeous and quite early oil painting on canvas of a country landscape, a serene setting of cattle resting and grazing amongst sheep in a hilly meadow pasture, hidden from the heat of the day in a shady grove beside the woods, a brook flowing just a few steps away.

The bright blue sky is interlaced with only a few white clouds over hills and farm in the distance. The clarity of execution in each of the animals is incredible, each detailed quite remarkably and with the typical somewhat odd proportions of animal depictions of that era.

This is a bright and contagious painting, bringing visual interest to any room, an highly nostalgic work depicting a simpler distant time. A wonderful find for any serious collector of early oil paintings, it is very desirable and sought after subject executed by a highly skilled hand.

Measurements: (framed) 33 5/8" wide x 25 5/8" high; (canvas) 30" wide x 22" high

Condition Report: Repaired tear from the back with a white T, that repair noticeable on the front as the inpainting is of slightly different hue than original. Inpainting here and there throughout, including the top left where craquelure is more significant. Most inpainting is confined to non-complex or visually important areas. It appears to be signed lower right, though this is only visible from certain angles and we looked closely but could not make out anything distinguishable (appears to have a four numeral date after the signature). Frame has chipping and gilt inpainting along it - it is probably not the original frame. A thin portion of the sky is brighter along the top edge - possibly where someone began cleaning the surface and decided to stop. A light bloom in the varnish along the left side, confined to the tree'd portion of the painting - this is visible from some angles only, and we tried to capture it with the camera. Overall a very handsome painting.
