Rare circa 1890s solid bronze advertising figural tray for Marmonier Fils, Lyon "Le Premier Pressoir", manufacturer of wine making equipment. The tray shows a primitive man with sword, fur clothing, and unusual facial hair squeezing grapes into a bowl while a grape vine and apple branch border his image. This trademark character is taken from the famous advertising poster created for the company by important artist Ludwig Hohenstein. This tray was probably intended for use as a change tray in a cafe or bistro. A beautiful, sharp casting with its original patina and in very fine condition with just some small spots in the patina below LYON. All the lettering is stamped into the surface which is part of the hand finishing that went into this high quality bronze. An exceptional and quite scarce 19th century advertising piece. The tray measures approx 5.75" by 4".
