1865 Civil War FORT MOULTRIE Sally Port & Ruins John P Soule Stereoview Charleston, SC Moultrieville in Distance

Up for sale is this VERY RARE 1860's Albumen Stereoview by John P Soule from the "Scenes of the Great Rebellion" series and titled No. 352 ~ Interior of Fort Moultrie, Moultrieville in dist.[ance] Charleston, S.C. [taken in March/April 1865]. Flat mount stereoview measures 6 3/4" wide by 3 1/4" high. Photo slight wear/soiling, but NO fading which is amazing for age, so contrast & details are excellent. Mount has normal light wear to corners and light soiling / slight staining to back. I would say it is in excellent condition for age, but since condition is subjective look at photos and decide for yourself. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY stereoview or Civil War collection.

View perfectly illustrates what happens when you have a war with cannons & mortars targeting brick structures, the brick loses big time!!! [A "modern" example of why castles went out of style in Europe when gunpowder was introduced.] Foreground shows part of the interior of Fort Moultrie with piles of bricks everywhere and partly/mostly destroyed brick walls. The "tunnel" through earthen wall embankment is the Sally Port or protected entrance to the fort. To the back right of Sally Port was another brick building on TOP of the embankment. Walls are mostly still standing, but have damage to top and cracks. To the left there is a regular constructed building which is also still standing, but has visible damage with holes in the sides & roof. Background shows various fort? buildings on left side & water with a sailboat or two on right side and land in the distance. Front left edge says: Scenes of the Great Rebellion. ~ Entered According to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by John P. Soule, in the clerk's office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Front right edge says: Charleston, S.C. and Forts in Vicinity ~ Photographed in March and April, 1865. Back says: Soule's Stereoscopic Views of ~ White Mountains and Vicinity, N.H. ~ Niagara Falls and Vicinity ~ Hudson River and West Point ~ Washington, New York and Boston. ~ Harper's Ferry, Va. ~ Scenes of the Great Rebellion. ~ Statuary, &c., &c. ~ Published by John P. Soule, 199 Washington Street, Boston.
