1865 Civil War FORT SUMTER Parapet John P Soule Stereoview Charleston, SC Toward Morris Island

Up for sale is this VERY RARE 1860's Albumen Stereoview by John P Soule from the "War Views" series and titled No. 342 ~ A Parapet of Fort Sumpter looking toward Morris Island. Flat mount stereoview measures 6 3/4" long by 3 1/4" high. Photo has some light soiling marks, small light stain near top left corner, and strong contrast to focal point with fading to distant background. Mount has light wear to rounded corners, 2 corners are dinged, and back has light soiling with some small stains or heavier soiling spots. I would say stereoview is in amazing condition for age, but enlarge photos and decide for yourself. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY stereoview or Civil War collection.

Stereoview shows part of the parapet of Fort Sumpter. At left of image you can see a horizontal row of wooden spikes projecting over the edge of the steep drop to the water below, obviously to help prevent a troop assault. Foreground has a cannon half protected by Gabion baskets, while background shows Gabion baskets used as a retaining wall / ramp for the cannon in the background. Morris island is the faded lines in distant background. Front left edge says: Entered According to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by John P. Soule, in the clerk's office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Back says: War Views, ~ Published By ~ John P. Soule, 199 Washington Street, Boston. ~Charleston, S.C. and Forts in Vicinity ~ Photographed in March and April, 1865.
