1865 Civil War FORT JOHNSON John P Soule Stereoview James Island, Charleston, SC Ft Sumter in Distance

Up for sale is this VERY RARE 1860's Albumen Stereoview by John P Soule from the "Scenes of the Great Rebellion" series and titled No. 350 ~ Fort Johnson, James Island, Ft. Sumpter [Sumter] in the dist.[ance] Charleston, S.C. [from March or April of 1865]. Flat mount stereoview measures 6 3/4" long by 3 1/4" high. Photo has strong contrast with no fading, slight soiling, and a moderate 1.75" long vertical crease through lower part of right image. Mount has wear to rounded corners, while back has light soiling, small wear area, and two short manufacturing imperfection lines [not visible on front]. I would say stereoview is VG condition overall though image quality is excellent, but since condition is subjective look at photos and decide for yourself. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY stereoview or Civil War collection.

Stereoview shows four artillery? pieces on their wooden blocks with two wheeled cannons also visible. The artillery is entrenched, while cannons are on the bulwarks. Note the steep piles of dirt between the artillery positions. Upper right shows a brick or stone building/fortification on the high point with what I assume is a flag pole. The small island seen in the distance in the upper left is Fort Sumter.Front left edge says: Scenes of the Great Rebellion. ~ Entered According to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by John P. Soule, in the clerk's office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Front right edge says: Charleston, S.C. and Forts in Vicinity ~ Photographed in March and April, 1865. Back repeats the title in pencil and also has the regular: Soule's Stereoscopic Views of ~ White Mountains and Vicinity, N.H. ~ Niagara Falls and Vicinity ~ Hudson River and West Point ~ Washington, New York and Boston. ~ Harper's Ferry, Va. ~ Scenes of the Great Rebellion. ~ Statuary, &c., &c. ~ Published by John P. Soule, 199 Washington Street, Boston.
