What can I say? Stretched out flat for display this brooch is 7" long! The mane is made up of 10 rhinestone chains of various sizes and colors: purple, gold, red, blue, and two shades of green. The colors of the rhinestones are offset by gold plating on the pair of horse heads and the stone settings. The mane swishes and flows with the movement of the wearer. The horse heads have a great expression on their faces and are modeled in a clean mid-century style. The brooch is unsigned but is one of those great wonders of unsigned costume jewelry.
Size: Horse head is 2-3/4" high x 2-1/2" wide exclusive of rhinestone mane. Laid flat, the head with mane stretches to 7" long. With the rhinestones draping down the brooch is approximately 4" wide x 5-3/4" high. No matter how you measure it this brooch is a bold spectacular piece!
Condition: Very good vintage condition. There is a little wear on the gold plating near the mane and on the back which does not affect the beauty of this brooch. The pin back is securely attached to the raised part of the horse's head on the back but, because its second point of attachment was to a lower part of the design, the solder joint is not secure at this second point. I think that this was a manufacturing defect since the solder blob does not extend to the back of the brooch and does not appear to be cracked, nor is the pin back bent (basically I think it was a poor solder joint from the start). However, the single solder joint that holds the back to the pin is 1/2" long and very secure.
