A rare find for serious collectors of cameos. The subject carved into these white, tan and black lava cameos are Roman or Greek goddesses, mounted onto 14k gold with a simple C closure at the back. In excellent condition with no chips or cracks in the lava.
Lava cameos were created as early as the 17th century at Mt. Vesuvius. During the Victorian era it became a very popular souvenir to bring home. Lava is also easily damaged because it was softer than shell, and the carvings would wear off from rubbing which is why it is quite rare to find lava cameos in pristine condition.
