A scarce Royal Doulton Rip Van Winkle Table Lighter (character jug / toby mug derivative). He was designed by Geoff Blower and hand-painted in England. It was issued between 1958-1959 and numbers D6463.
In 1820, the American writer Washington Irving wrote the story of Rip Van Winkle, based on legends he had heard from Dutch settlers. While walking in the Catskill Mountains of New York, Rip drinks a fairy potion, falls asleep for 20 years and wakes to find an unrecognizable world.
There is a chip to the tail of the black bird (shown in the last picture), he is in otherwise excellent condition with no crazing or cracks. He measures approximately 4 inches high.
