1772 Doubloon Gold Coin Pendant Mexico

A scarce 8 Escudos or 4 Doubloon Gold Coin bearing the Mexican mint mark.

The Mexican gold 8 Escudos, is very similar to the Spanish 8 Escudos, the only difference, in many cases, being the mint mark. The issues for Spain usually have a crowned M for the Madrid Mint, whereas the Mexican versions have an Mo monogram for the Mexico City Mint.

The Obverse shows a large armored bust of Carol III (King Charles III of Spain who reigned from 1759 - 1788). The Legend: D G stands for Dei Gratia, by the Grace of God, and HISP ET IND means of Spain and the Indies. The reverse has the Spanish Royal shield flanked by 8 S. The Legend: The phrase AUSPICE DEO IN UTRO FELIX translates roughly to under God's will we will happily prosper.

Between 1492 and 1825 Spain enjoyed a virtual monopoly in the world's gold production, with nearly 70 per cent coming from the Spanish colonies in the Americas. A substantial amount of the gold mined was used in the production of gold coins by the various mints established in the Spanish colonies. Mexico, known as New Spain remained under Spanish rule until independence was declared on 16th September 1810 by Father Miguel Hidalgo

The largest gold coin struck was the 8-escudo piece more commonly known as the doubloon. This substantial coin has a diameter of 37 mm, weighs approximately 27 grams (28 grams with the pendant addition), has a gold fineness of 0.9010 and gold content of 0.7841 Oz.

It is in very good condition (it maintains its original lustre which is bright and yellow). Please see the pictures for the signs of wear. A pendant piece has been expertly added to the top (to avoid causing damage) of the coin to allow it to be used as a pendant (we carry a number of gold chains for sale, should you wish to use it as such).

The Doubloon and their silver equivalent (pieces of eight) have become synonyms with pirates and their treasure. 8 Escudos from 1772 and earlier, in good condition, seldom comes to market as they are tightly held by collectors.
