From a Collector's estate sale in France we present this large stunning vintage French Art Deco Era Bronze Statue of a Dancer in the style of the Ballets Russes. Un-Signed. C. 1900-1940
This is a rare and wonderful semi-nude bronze statue featuring a beautiful Art Deco Dancer presented in Ballets Russes form with her exotic and erotic costume. She is quiet typical of the dancers that set Paris ablaze during the era that captivated the world. Costumed dancers served as a major catalyst for artist and sculptors alike who ushered in the Art Deco era in provocative style by displaying them in various poses and costumes. She is grandly posed in a dance move that includes wrist cuffs with a long brass chain, which is not original to the statue and was added for image presentation purposes. We suspect that the original chain was probably bronze - not sure.
Exoticism played an important role in the conception of Art Deco. Early on, in 1908, the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev arrived in Paris with his dance troupe, the Ballets Russes. and the set and costume designs of Léon Bakst, Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse, among others. The impact of the Ballets Russes reverberated throughout the art world. The company's productions—characterized by their somewhat brilliantly colored, outré orientalist sets and costumes that brought to mind the richness of an Ali Baba cave—became instantly popular among fashionable Parisians, making an immediate impact on French and World taste.
A fine beautiful statue of wonderful artistic presentation depicting this graceful erotic performer in wonderful style. The artistic details and fine casting suggest this great Art Deco heirloom is from a Master French Shop. With her full headdress and Russian style costume she is caught in a dance step. Her arms – opened wide with her wrist bound with wrist cuffs attached to a long chain.
It is extremely difficult to find these statues in any condition, much less bronze and in this fine shape. This is a great serious collector piece of wonderful detail and beauty.
